How to Get Involved
OFFLOAD MERCHANDISE
Every month the Mission receives calls from corporations looking to off-load merchandise that is undeliverable to their regular customers. If you would like to see if the Mission could use your items, please contact Linda at 206.723.0767 x405 for more information.
RESCUE KITS
The winter months are terribly hard for homeless people sleeping on the streets. Survival kits are a key component in helping homeless men and women survive the cold temperatures. These kits are passed out to those people sleeping on the streets through our Search and Rescue Van.
SPECIAL PROJECTS
Make it a "White" Christmas
The Mission uses over 10,000 lbs of sugar each year. We would love to have someone make it snow sugar over the holidays.
Calling all bakers!
As you start baking for the holidays, put some of your unbaked drop cookie and refrigerator cookie dough aside for use at the Mission. Drop cookies can be placed on cookie sheets, frozen, and then bagged for later use. Rolls of refrigerator cookie dough can also be frozen. This project will allow women and children at our shelter along with the children in our youth programs to have an evening of baking cookies.
Cookies & cocoa
Collect cookies, coca & tea for the rescue van. The van is out every night in cold weather and uses about 50 gallons of cocoa each night. That, along with snacks, helps men, women, and children survive the elements when they can't find shelter indoors for the night.
Build a gift card tree
Gift cards help us provide items that aren't normally donated. Men, women, and children all need shoes, bus fare, a quick meal while job hunting, and the ability to make a phone call. These are just a few of the things that gift cards address.
Giving trees
We provide paper ornaments with gifts written on them. Your participants select an ornament and purchase the item listed. Presents shouldn't be wrapped. You just need to select and shop. Giving tress can be tailored to your group's interests.
Sponsor an "It's a Wrap!" party
Each year hundreds of children, youth, and adults receive Christmas and birthday presents at the Mission. These presents need to be wrapped but there are always more gifts to be wrapped than paper available. Have a movie night with wrappings as the admission price.
Kitchen Aprons and Pot Holders
All of our kitchens are in need of aprons and pot holders. Presently, most of our cooks are men so aprons need to be in colors or patterns that men will wear. These could be purchased or be a sewing project. We can supply a pattern and possibly fabric for this project.
Pick 4
Pick 4 items or categories of food or toiletries that you would like to focus on and assign each one a week of the month asking church members to donate those items on the week assigned. The Mission will be glad to pick donations up. Items needed continually include:
- Deodorant
- Razors
- Shaving Cream
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Tube socks
- Men's underwear
- Peanut butter and jelly
- Snack foods and juice boxes
- Hot chocolate (large containers)
Plan a "night out"
Have a party and collect all the things someone might need for a night out on the town. Ideas for things needed include:
- Gift cards for fast food restaurants
- Gift Certificates for movies
- Telephone cards (in case you need to call home!)
- Bus tickets (in case you don't have a car.)
- Gift certificates for museums and theatres
Have a Spa Night
Have a night of relaxation and collect fragrant gift items share with the women in our shelter. Gift items might include:
- Fragrant lotions
- Candles
- Throws
- Manicure kits
- Nail polish and related items
- Facial cleansers
- Hair products
- Black tea (refreshment)
- Chocolates (more refreshment!)
