Hats off to this "cowboy"

Once an alcoholic without hope, Tim has found a way to give back to his community

Tim was your typical "construction cowboy." He made good money. But he also could spend it like there was no tomorrow. One weekend, he went through $4,800 on limousines, alcohol, drugs and women he met in bars.

By Monday morning, he was broke and needed to ask his boss to borrow $100 because he didn't have any money for groceries or gas.

"That's how reckless my life had become," Tim remembers.

After his mom and dad died, Tim says he didn't care if he lived anymore. "I was on a suicidal road to ruin," he remembers. And as proof, he admits to eight drunk driving arrests --- including two in one day --- that almost got Tim a year in prison.

But Tim walked into our Mission for breakfast and a cup of coffee one morning. Seeing that beaten-down look in his eyes, a staff member asked, "Do you want to talk? Do you want some prayer?"

Tim needed both. Afterwards, he called his boss.

"I'm going to be a little late for work," Tim told his employer. "How late?" his boss asked. "About six months!" Tim replied.

Tim joined the New Creations recovery program, graduated, and then signed up for Advanced Christian Therapy for people considering a future in ministry.

After graduating, he worked as a contact supervisor at the Mission. Then he took a position with Bread of Life Mission on First Avenue as their program director.

Today, Tim is married with two stepchildren, and owns his own construction company. Clearly, the life-changing experience he went through has affected many others around him.

"I'll never forget where I came from," he says. "It made God real to me. Now, Jesus is my best friend. I never had that before."
