Losing everything was “a blessing”

When Gina says she was all alone last Christmas, she means it. Because of her drug addiction, she lost everything – including her two boys.

“My ex-husband took them and said he wouldn’t let me see them again until I was clean and sober.”

She even lost her kids’ things – including family photos – when she fell behind in paying for her storage unit and everything was sold at auction.

“That was the final straw,” Gina said, right before coming to our Women and Children’s Shelter. “But it was also a blessing. I never would have surrendered if that hadn’t happened.”

This year, Gina can’t wait for Christmas. For one thing, she’ll have 120 days behind her, clean and sober. For another, her boys will be back in her life.

“I miss my boys so much,” said Gina. “God willing, I’ll be back in their lives so I can be their mother again.”
