Open Door offers two weekly legal clinics for the residents at both the Mission's Men's Shelter and Women and Children's Shelter and two residential programs. At the weekly clinics our staff attorney and dedicated volunteer lawyers and law students meet with up to four clients for free legal consultations. Follow-up services are then provided, as available and appropriate, in order to help the clients work toward resolution of their legal matters.
In addition, Open Door, offers a walk-in legal clinic once a week to homeless clients who are not resident of the Mission's recovery programs. These men and women receive a free legal consultation with our staff or volunteer attorneys and subsequent follow up service as needed.
Through the legal clinics Open Door assists clients with matters relation to domestic violence, child support and visitation, criminal warrants and debts, and various other civil legal matters.
"The Legal Services of the Union Gospel Mission has helped me in a lot of ways: child support, tax returns, and spiritual guidance. I could not have managed without their help. I thank God that He works through people and places such as the Mission." -former Men's Shelter client At Open Door, we strive to help individuals resolve their legal issues and, by supplementing the other care and services offered by the Mission, to restore lives and offer hope.
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” -Proverbs 31:8-9
