Dawn's Story

During her 19 years in prison, Dawn became acquainted with serial killers like Charles Manson's "family": Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinkel and Susan Atkins. She thought she would always be a career criminal.

Dawn was planning on going to go to a home full of drug-users, an environment that would suck her back into addiction -- and jail. "I prayed to God to help me," she recalls. "The day before I got out, my caseworker told me I could not be released to that house -- because it had burned to the ground!"

But Dawn didn't want to go to our shelter, either. She pictured a big room filled with women and children sleeping on mats. So when we welcomed her with a big, friendly smile and showed her a cozy room just for her, she was surprised! As she tells us today: "I came with every intention of leaving. But I heard a message that 'I'm worth something,' and that I could be forgiven."

Contacting her 7-year-old daughter sealed Dawn's decision to stay with us and turn her life around. "She was very grown up," recalls Dawn. "And she said, 'Mommy, I have a few questions. Are you done doing drugs? Are you done being locked up? How soon can you see me?'"

Filled with determination not to disappoint her child, Dawn enrolled in our recovery program, worked hard and graduated. Now, she is not only a good mom, but she shares her testimony with congregations and recovery groups, inspiring others to change their lives. "The Mission has done more for me than 19 years in prison ever could."
