Legal matters often present barriers to an individuals full recovery and ability to exit homelessness. In response to this need, Seattles Union Gospel Mission founded its Legal Services department in 1999. Since then, we have been providing free legal advice, representation, and referral services to homeless men and women staying in our shelters. Legal Services offers weekly legal clinics at both the Missions Mens Shelter and at the Missions Women and Children's Shelter. At the weekly clinics, our staff attorney and dedicated volunteer lawyers and law students meet with clients for a 40-minute legal consultation. Follow-up services may also be provided, as available and appropriate. Common legal issues presented by our clients include domestic violence, suspended drivers licenses, outstanding criminal warrants, child support, and debtor-creditor matters. "The Legal Services of the Union Gospel Mission has helped me in a lot of ways: child support, tax returns, and spiritual guidance. I could not have managed without their help. I thank God that He works through people and places such as the Mission."At Legal Services, we strive to help individuals resolve their legal issues and, by supplementing the other care and services offered by the Mission, to restore lives and offer hope. Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.
