Gift Planning Appreciated Securities When you give a gift of stocks or bonds to Seattle's Union Gospel Mission, you'll benefit in multiple ways. First, the IRS allows you to deduct your securities gift as a charitable donation and receive a tax break. Second, you will avoid capital gains tax when you make the transfer. Third, you'll become a partner in providing much needed food, shelter and other care to your community's homeless men, women and children. For more information on how to give a gift of appreciated securities, please contact our Planned Giving Department at 206.723.0767, or donorrelations@ugm.org.
For many, this is the simplest way to give a gift. It is immediate, which means we can put the gift to use right away to help men, women and children in need. In addition, you can receive a charitable tax deduction for the full amount of your gift. Your gift of cash can be made in a variety of ways:
You may prefer to leave your assets and cash flow alone until your death, making your gift through your estate instead. A bequest or estate gift is among the simplest and most effective giving tools you can use Estate gifts are critically important to the Mission's long-term financial strength. They help ensure our ability to meet the opportunities and challenges of the future. The simplest way to make a legacy gift is to make a specific outright bequest through a will or trust. You may also use life insurance or the balance remaining in your retirement plan by designating UGM as a beneficiary. For more information on will planning and legacy giving, please contact our Planned Giving Department at 206.723.0767, or donorrelations@ugm.org.
What is a charitable gift annuity? One of the most common and popular ways to make a planned gift is through a Charitable Gift Annuity. Basically, a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) is a simple contract between you and a nonprofit organization, such as Seattle's Union Gospel Mission (UGM). In exchange for an irrevocable (nonrefundable) gift, UGM agrees to pay one or two annuitants (beneficiaries of an annuity) a fixed dollar amount each year for life. The annuity amount is determined based on life expectancy of the annuitant(s): the older you are at the time of the gift, the greater the amount can be. The general resources of the Mission guarantee the payments.
What are the benefits to a CGA?
As a result of this irrevocable gift, you will receive:
How will my gift be used? All funds remaining after the death of the last annuitant will be used by the Mission for its vital, life-changing services to homeless and hurting men, women and children, helping them become contributing members of our community. Your gift will ensure that the Mission is able to continue to reach those in need for years to come. What do I need to do to learn more? Each situation and individual is unique. To explore some of the benefits the Charitable Gift Annuity may have for you, talk to your estate planning attorney or CPA. Seattle's Union Gospel Mission is happy to arrange a consultation with attorney Mark Albertson, our estate planning consultant, at no cost to you. Mark will answer any questions you have about Charitable Gift Annuities or any other estate planning vehicle Key information for Planned Givers
